Public Statement - Learner and Provisional (P1) motorcyclists excluded from speed limit raise

The Department of State Growth (DSG) has announced that Learner and Provisional (P1) motorcycle licence holders have been excluded from an increase in maximum speed limits which will apply for L2 and P1 car drivers from 2 March 2015.

The Department of State Growth (DSG) has announced that Learner and Provisional (P1) motorcycle licence holders have been excluded from an increase in maximum speed limits which will apply for L2 and P1 car drivers from 2 March 2015.

The Tasmanian Motorcycle Council (TMC) understands that the decision to exclude motorcyclists was based on the over-representation of novice motorcyclists in crashes in Tasmania: Approximately 28% of all motorcycle claims to MAIB in the past year were from Learner licence holders and a further 14% from Provisional riders.

The most common cause of crashes for Leaner and Provisional motorcyclists is inexperience (70% for Learners and 58% for Provisional licence holders). Nearly half of all crashes involving novice riders occur at under 60km/h.
